Which parts of your house should you insulate?

Whether you want to insulate your new house or an old one, it is in both the cases an excellent investment. Not only does insulation control the heat flow in your house, but it also drops down your electricity bills. In the long run, insulation has tremendous benefits. Considering the energy crisis that has been on the rise for many years, insulation is a very effective way to save energy.

How does insulation work?
The word insulation literally means protecting something or reducing the flow of heat or sound. The idea behind insulating a home is to control the heat flow within the house in order to maintain a normal room temperature. Heat is constantly flowing around us and it rises from bottom to top and moves from the hotter regions to the cooler regions. So, in summers, the hotter air outside moves inside your house and in the winters the warm air inside your house moves outside the house towards the cooler air. To compensate for the heat gain and loss during summers and winters respectively we use air conditioners and heaters. This uses up a lot of electricity and has a negative effect on the environment. When you insulate your house, the movement of heat slows down. Which means, that lets your house stay cool during the summers and warm during the winters. This way, you end up not using the air conditioners hence saving energy and your money.

Insulating different parts of your house:
There are different materials that are used for insulation. Currently the SIP panels by R-Control are gaining a lot of popularity for their efficiency. Different insulated panels have different R-values which means ‘resistance to heat’. The greater the R- value of the material, the more effective it will be.

When it comes to insulating your house, the first question that arises is that which parts of your house you should insulate. The most important area of your house to be insulated is your walls. The insulation panels are fitted between the walls in order to stop the heat from escaping. But, if you really want to seal your house and completely insulate it, then only insulating the walls will not be enough. A part from the walls, you must also insulate your windows. The air might escape from the tiny spaces between your window sills and you can stop it by completely sealing your windows.

The room in your house that must be insulated for maximum protection is your attic. Since heat moves upwards it’s easier for it to escape through the attic. Insulating your attic can be very useful during the winters.  Another room that should be insulated in your house is your basement. Not many people pay attention to it, but insulating your basement can be an excellent way to control the heat flow. For maximum protection, it is also extremely important that you insulate your ceiling. If you have a cathedral ceiling then it is very important to have it insulated with the right material.

Other that insulating these rooms and your walls, insulating your floors can also have a positive effect. By insulating your floors you are able to control the heat generated from the rooms below especially in your basement. Insulating the floors can also reduce the noise levels greatly.Another excellent way to completely seal your house is to insulate your crawlspaces. It ensures that the heat is not escaping from tiny spaces. Moreover, it is extremely beneficial for stopping the water from freezing in the pipes during the winters. During summers, it makes sure that water doesn’t get too hot.

Insulating your house will not only help you save money but it will also help in saving energy and protecting the environment. If you want your house insulation to work and to be effective, make sure that your house is completely sealed.
